Speed Art Museum

The Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky enjoys a history of close to a century. Originally established in 1925 by Hattie Bishop Speed, the wife of J.B.Speed, to be a memorial to her husband, has grown to be the largest and oldest art museum with an impressive array of more than 13,000 art pieces in their permanent collections.

Towards funding the museum, Hattie Speed had also set up an endowment with a stipulation that the museum shall never charge an admission fee. The tradition continues to date, though a $4 donation is often recommended. In modern times, the museum is visited by over 180,000 people every year.
