Chartered in 1833, University of Louisville is a research university, which is nationally recognized and is supported by the state. A total of 21,761 students were enrolled in 2008(Fall) out of which 2,418 were African-American. Auguste Rodin a French sculptor personally managed the casting of the Thinker statue that can be found on the steps of Grawemeyer Hall. University of Louisville was founded in the year 1798 and has a rich heritage. The university was the city's first publicly owned university. By the command of the Kentucky General Assembly the university is now a superb metropolitan research university. This university is financially strong enough to incorporate necessary changes for the advancement of the students and the curriculum.

The university has a very finely tune academic program. The university offers study of 170 disciplines through various graduate, post graduate, and professional programs. The university has over 12 schools and colleges. Various undergraduate disciplines are Accountancy, aerospace studies, art, bioengineering, business administration, economics, literature and many more. Many PhD and master degree studies are also available from the university.

The university has well enriched separate libraries for separate departments. The library has installed a robotic retrieval system that can store up to a million books. Students can also connect to the library online database for reference. There are huge amount of information available for the students. There are seven library buildings altogether.

The university has several states of art campuses, which houses students, faculty and delegates. The housing for the students have facilities like telephone, data line per resident, cable TV, good kitchen facility and many more. The University of Louisville is a research university situated in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area and is supported by the state. It was initially a public institution that was supported municipally for many years before it joined the university system in the year 1970.

The University of Louisville consists of a total of three campuses. The first is the Belknap Campus that is spread across 287-acres and is located just three miles from downtown Louisville. The campus is home to a total of 7 of the university colleges and schools.

The second campus is the Health Sciences Center which is located within the downtown Louisville's medical complex. The center is home to the University of Louisville Hospital and the various university health related programs.

Last but not the least the Shelby Campus is situated in eastern Jefferson County and is spread out over 243-acres of land.
