First Saturday in May is generally the schedule for the world famous Kentucky Derby. Two weeks before the commencement of the Derby, The Kentucky Derby festival gets under way and the Thunder over Louisville representing the largest display of fireworks anywhere in America marks the beginning of the festival. The Great Steam boat race, the Pegasus parade, and several other smaller events totaling to about 70 are spread over the two week long period.

During Memorial Day weekend, the five day long Beatles Festival is hosted on the Belvedere and is the largest of Beatles annual festivals.

September is the time for the annual Bluegrass hot air balloon festival, similar to Albuquerque's world famous balloon festival. This is also the time for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival featuring some of the finest bourbon anywhere in the world. Jeffersontown in the neighborhood hosts the annual Gaslight Festival during the same period and is spread over a whole week. The attendance at this festival often exceeds 200,000 every year.

October particularly is the month for art lovers in Louisville. The St.James Court Art Show gets under way in Old Louisville during this period. Large number of artists exhibit and even sell their wares at this event. Art enthusiasts and art collectors too throng this event to get the best out of it.

Next only to the Kentucky Derby this event attracts the largest attendance. Art lovers visiting Louisville during other months can take advantage of the First Friday Trolley Hop which takes them around to several of the downtown art galleries on the first Friday of each month.
